Pole floats stream-lined body, ultra light and sensitive, great bite indicator.
There are many different variations of pole floats. The size, color, shape and tip color varies greatly between manufacturers. Better to have floats with different color tips. Black is great for very bright days, Orange is good for normal light, and yellow is great for low light. Sometimes even good idea to have fluorescent tips.
Pole floats have small body located nearer the top of the float and slim stem.
The body is typically made from balsa wood because it is very floating and the same time pretty strong. Another advantage of balsa wood it also can be in many different shapes and designs that affect the way the float sits in the water and responds to fish bait.
The stem of a pole float have to be very strong and very light. Stems can be made of variety materials with different characteristics.
Cane is the most common and usual material used to make stems. It is very cheap and natural looking.
Thin gauge wire and spring steel made steam very strong but a little heavier.
Fiberglass is very strong and pretty light.
Plastic is light, but isn't strong. It is very cheap and very easy to break.
Carbon fiber is extremely strong and extra light. The superior quality but a little more expensive than others.
There are many different shapes and designs of pole floats that suit most situations.
Slim body pole floats
Slim shaped balsa body with extra long carbon stem and extra thick long cane bristle. Designed to fish with paste baits on still waters. They are extremely sensitive yet robust and are used to catch fish on canals, lakes or slow rivers. The body is very thin and doesn't have a lot of buoyancy. These floats don't required a lot of weight to 'set' in the water. Suitable for all types of baits.
Made to the very highest standards and designed for finesse fishing.
Long carbon stem
Body is made of Phragmites australis Balsa wood.

Anglers use 'dust' shot for this floats, they will indicate the most delicate bites. The shot size used is very small, so you can still set the float rig up correctly, make it higher or lover depending on fishing environments and your needs. Slim 'cigar' type float good choice for canals and 'on the drop' fishing. The narrow body provides minimal resistance on the strike allowing more fish to be hooked.
Body-up pole floats
The 'body-up' pole floats have wider part closer to the tip float body, that makes the center of gravity is closer to the float tip. This provides better stability for the float. This float is suited to most fishing environment, is typically used for moving water, it works very well in calm water, it works great in curving towing water, and it works well even under windy conditions.
Very long body pole floats with body-up shape bare best for still or slow moving water (lakes, canals, drains) when presenting baits on-the-drop using a lightweight, strung out shutting pattern. The balsa body is extra slim and require very little shot to cock float correctly, also it can be used very delicate shutting patterns when incorporating these style of floats.
Made to the very highest standards and designed for finesse fishing.

More about Body-Up Pole Float...
Body-down pole floats
The body down tear drop shaped pole float has wider part closer to the bottom of the float body. This float works well in most fishing environment, perfect for river fishing, suitable for deeper still waters, using it for calm water is the best.
Shoulder-up pole floats
The Shoulder-up float has a fatter body at the top and tapering down to the bottom. The body then tapers off nearer the tip. The long thin taper on the body allows you to use different amounts of shot when setting the float up. This type of float works very well on both calm and windy days. If the wind picks up, then just remove a piece of shot, so the float tip can ride higher in the water. If the wind dies and it is calm, then add the shot again so that the tip is lower in the water. They are also more or less intended for river pole fishing as you can hold them back in the flow.
